Graduate Student Letter in Support of Dr. Homa Katouzian

It is with great regret and dismay that we have witnessed a flurry of press in both the British and Persian-language media casting aspersions on Dr. Homa Katouzian’s reputation by means of unsubstantiated innuendo and anonymous accusers.   Irrespective of the admissions process which led to Mr. Hashemi-Bahramani’s acceptance to the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford, the below signed would like to express their total confidence in Dr. Katouzian’s academic and personal integrity in the course of this process.  This letter should not be interpreted as an endorsement of Mr. Hashemi-Bahramani’s academic competence, but instead as a forceful and unqualified expression of support for Dr. Katouzian.  We find it deeply troubling that Dr. Katouzian has been singled out in both the British and Iranian press as the key decision-maker in the admissions process, when his input was merely one factor amongst many others.

In this letter we will refrain from conveying the disparate views of the undersigned concerning the controversy revolving around Mr. Hashemi-Bahramani’s competency in English, living arrangements, past academic experience or alleged plagiarism.  What we do agree upon is that no fault can be alleged in evaluating Dr. Katouzian’s conduct and we find it absolutely preposterous that he should be expected to be privy to such matters in making his academic assessment.

The heart of the matter is that as graduate students of the university we wish to collectively express our support for the moral probity and academic integrity of Dr. Katouzian, who we consider not only amongst the most important members of the Iranian Studies scholarly community, but also a devoted and selfless teacher.

Yours sincerely,
